Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager Human Resources, this position is located in our downtown Vancouver, BC office. The Payroll/Benefits Specialist is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely payroll for non-union employees and retirees.  As well as administering our pension, benefits and savings plans for all union, non-union employees and retirees. As a member of the HR Team, this role is also a backup for the Human Resources Generalist.

  • Administer and maintain group benefits and pension plans (defined benefit plans and defined contribution plans), including submission of new enrollments, changes and terminations.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation and remittances for group insurance and pension plans, Medical Services Plan, Workers' Compensation, and other remittances directly relating to payroll, including ROE filing, preparation of T4's and summaries.
  • Process payroll for non-union employees through JD Edward, and maintain payroll records.
  • Respond to payroll queries from employees, management and external parties.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and organization policies and procedures. Prepare written communication regarding new and changed policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with management, caseworkers, and employees regarding Disability issues (STD and LTD), and maintain all records.
  • Assisting with the month end duties and year-end audits. Special projects and ad hoc analysis.
  • Prepare journal entries and bank reconciliations.
  • Act as backup for HR Generalist duties.
Requirements:

Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a similar role.
  • Previous experience with pension plans (defined contribution and defined benefit) and benefits administration. Experience with payroll systems, preferably JD Edwards.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Post-secondary education in accounting or payroll, with Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) certification preferred.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workloads under tight deadlines.
  • Strong technical, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and judgement in the management of confidential information.
  • Proven Teamwork and relationship building skills.
