Disability 101/Best Practices in Mental Health

This 2-hours session will provide a baseline understanding of the disability management process for organizations in Canada and a review of each stakeholder’s role and responsibility. This will include a high-level look at early intervention and accommodation and return to work best practices. The discussion will also be enhanced with information pertinent to the leading cause of disability in Canada: Mental Health. Nir will provide an overview of the impact on Canadian’s mental health due to COVID19 outbreak, barriers to receiving mental health care, strategies to reduce stigma, how to support employees through stay-at-work and RTW, and explore how technology is helping shape the landscape of receiving psychotherapeutic tx.


Nir Yahav is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and is a mental health specialist with Manulife’s National Disability Best Practices, where he guides and coaches case managers and disability benefits operations teams on mental health claims as well as implements best practices for mental health disability management. Nir has 13 years of counselling experience with clients struggling with various mental health challenges, addictions, trauma, violence in relationships and intimate relationships. Nir has been a presenter on the topic of workplace mental health at numerous conferences. He has also spoken about domestic violence and has written articles on the topic of anger management.

Shawn Wakley is a Disability Management Consultant in the Manulife’s Vancouver office. He brings over 16 years of experience in the Group Insurance market including customer service, claims management, service and group sales. Shawn has studied French and Bio-Medical Sciences at the University of Guelph and spent 2 years in Alsace, France where he completed a Bachelor’s of Insurance and Financial Services. He also holds both the FLMI and CEBS designations and has recently completed his Master’s of Business Administration.
