“’Data! Data! Data!’ he cried impatiently. ‘I can’t make bricks without clay.’” – Sherlock Holmes

This session aims to explore (and inspire!) better use of data by pension and benefits plans. Data is available in many forms and from a wide variety of different sources; from publicly available data from Statistics Canada, to plan specific data on your plan members, to the massive data sets that sit behind Generative AI. We provide examples on how to make practical use of data and the tools that are built from it, and how to take the data you already have and improve on it. Where possible, we will use examples focused on Atlantic Canada to bring this to life.

Presented by: Jesse Adams, Ember Experience

Artificial Intelligence is becoming a vast disruptor in every area of work and culture. While some view these innovations as miracles, some perceive them as threats to their livelihoods and the world. All of these factors and stories create narratives that impact our workplace cultures and organizational behaviours and values. In this 60-minute presentation we will explore the elements that AI could have or is having in your workplace and implications for culture, workforce engagement, and outcomes.

This session will explore:
  • The current state and understanding of AI and its workplace impacts
  • Impacts on individuals and their experience from a mental health perspective
  • Practical actions for organizations, leaders and individuals

Join us at the end of the day for chance to networking with fellow attendees and speakers.

Refreshments and appetizers will be served.

Our Speakers:

Steve Kelloway
TELUS Health

Steve Kelloway was born and raised in the southern resort area of Newfoundland, the Burin Peninsula, where his path towards data analytics began with his first summer job at the College of the North Atlantic (keying a lot of data over those 16 weeks). From there, data was never far away, whether it was in the physics lab at Dalhousie, studying for actuarial exams, or over his 28 year career as a pension actuary.

Steve spent the first five years of his career in St. John’s, and now lives in Halifax with his wife and two children. As an Associate Partner with TELUS Health, he now spends most of his time working with clients on the design and risk management of their pension plans; but he still enjoys peeking over the shoulder of the actuarial analysts and annoying them with questions about their data.
