It’s not every day that a new jointly sponsored pension plan is established! With the launch of the University Pension Plan Ontario (UPP) on July 1, 2021, two of UPP’s managing directors will share the Plan’s journey to Day One and describe their experience in setting up the UPP.

Faisal Siddiqi, FSA, FCIA

Managing Director -University Pension Plan (Ontario)

 

Faisal is a pension actuary who has been providing advice on the funding, accounting, investment management, and the administration of pension plans for thirty years. He currently works at the University Pension Plan (Ontario) as Managing Director – Actuarial with oversight of the plan’s valuation and investment strategy. Prior to that, Faisal was employed at a number of large actuarial and management consulting firms providing advice to many plan sponsors in the private sector, public sector, and multi-employer pension plan markets.


Faisal is a member of Ontario’s Financial Services Tribunal and also teaches on various pension topics as part of Humber College’s Pension Plan Administration Course (PPAC). He is a frequent speaker at pension conferences (CPBI, IF, CEBS and Benefits Canada) and actuarial meetings (Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Society of Actuaries) and has published a number of pension papers for the SOA and the CD Howe Institute.
Faisal is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science and Statistics (Dean’s Honours List). He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and has led many professional committees of the CIA and SOA.

   
 
Jeff Dejean

Treasury and Total Fund Management  -University Pension Plan (Ontario)


 

Jeff Dejean is UPP’s Managing Director Total Fund Management and Treasury, where he is responsible for long-term total Plan management and management of the UPP Balance Sheet, as well as ongoing evolution of UPP’s investment tools.  He is also responsible for Treasury activities including cash management and liquidity, as well as interest rate risk, foreign exchange risks, and collateral management as required.  

A banking industry expert in Asset/Liability Management, Jeff has spent the majority of his career in the Treasury areas of large Canadian Chartered Banks.  He has deep experience in all major areas of Treasury, balance sheet management and optimization.  Jeff is known as an innovative leader who develops diverse, high performing teams, and as an expert in ALM, investment management and performance management.
