Russel Metals is one of the largest metals distribution and processing companies in North America servicing customers primarily in Canada and the United States. The company conducts business in three metals distribution segments: metals service centers, energy products and steel distributors. We provide steel processing and distribution services to a broad base of approximately 35,000 end users through a network of 148 branches.

We are currently looking for a full-time bilingual (French and English) Pension and Benefits Analyst for an eight (8) month contract in our Corporate Head Office located in Mississauga, ON.

Reporting to the Manager Compensation and Benefits in a small team environment, you will provide full service pension and group insurance administration and technical support to our Canadian and U.S. employees. The ideal candidate will be fluently bilingual with a strong background in pension administration.


Pensions and Benefits

  • Calculate retirement, termination and death benefits under multiple defined benefit pension plans accurately and in a timely manner
  • Respond to inquiries regarding the interpretation of insurance coverage and pension provisions
  • Provide timely and accurate information to managers and employees on company benefits and policies
  • Calculate and remit monthly insurance premiums to various carriers in U.S. and Canada
  • Calculate and remit monthly pension contributions
  • Prepare PAs, PARS and annual regulatory submissions (e.g. AIRs, Form 7s, etc.)
  • Process life insurance and accidental death claims
  • Prepare and reconcile actuarial data for pension valuations
  • Prepare and distribute annual pension statements for active and inactive members
  • Assist with special projects


  • Assist with the annual salary and wage review for Canadian operations
  • Prepare and calculate annual bonus plan payments
  • Maintain job evaluation records
  • Complete compensation and benefits surveys and maintain market information 

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent.  A Pension Plan Administration Certificate (PPAC) is an asset.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in pension and benefits administration
  • Exceptional organizational skills demonstrating an ability to use time effectively and to efficiently manage multiple and competing priorities with tight deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrating the ability to communicate technical information in a non-technical manner to plan members
  • Working knowledge of benefits administration practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of insurance contracts
  • Highly proficient in the use of Excel spreadsheets with complex formulas and other MS Office applications
  • Experience with HR information systems; knowledge of VIP would be an asset
  • Experience working with union pension and benefits plans
  • Bilingual (French & English)
