Description:

The CUPE EWBT provides health and dental benefits as well as life insurance to over 40,000 eligible CUPE members who work in the Ontario education sector.  The CUPE EWBT was established through a Trust Agreement and the benefits plan became effective on March 1, 2018.  The Board of Trustees is seeking a Benefits Manager to provide support to the Trust until August 31, 2019, subject to renewal thereafter.

Role Description:

Reporting to the Managing Director of the CUPE EWBT, the Benefits Manager is responsible for providing ongoing support to the Managing Director and the CUPE EWBT Board to help ensure the success of the Board of Trustees in achieving its mission and delivering on its key responsibilities.

This position is available immediately and is expected to work both in the office and remotely, as required and necessary.

Key responsibilities:

·        Respond to emails and phone calls from plan members, draft and issue responses to routine queries they may have or forward to administrator or insurer - advocate for members as appropriate

·        Research member appeals and make recommendations to the MD and/or Appeals Committee, -

·        Process invoices, payroll and Trustee expenses for approval

·        Make recommendations on process improvements or website content and coordinate updates to the Trust’s website with approved content

·        Assist in preparing board and committee meeting packages

·        Schedule, organize and attend committee and board meetings, this may include transcribing and distributing meeting minutes. Ensure that appropriate action is taken on matters requiring follow-up.

·        Schedule and organize meetings for the Managing Director and Board Chair

·        Coordinate and review monthly or quarterly plan financial statements (balance sheet and income statement production) – including investment matters and benefit payments as appropriate

·        Review bank accounts and statements from service providers for accuracy and completeness – identifying any areas of concern or requiring further clarification and follow-up

·        Draft formal reports (and other documents as required), including researching data, coordinating and editing material submitted by others

·        Assist with Trust policy development

·        Assist MD with correspondence and reporting with the Settlors of the Trust

·        Assist managing director with all administrative functions including, but not limited to, filing, documenting, photocopying, scanning and printing all necessary documents.

·        Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Qualifications:

·        Preference will be given to candidates who are CUPE members with a strong knowledge of the education sector, have extensive group benefits knowledge (minimum 10 years) and service background and are bilingual.

·        Knowledge of general bookkeeping, and budgeting

·        A strong team player who will partner with others, can work independently and be

proactive

·        Personal qualities of maturity, tact and discretion

·        Advanced computer skills, including a proficiency and experience using MS Office products – Word, Outlook, PowerPoint  and Excel.

·        Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills

·        Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and work effectively with others

·        Demonstrated ability to organize work and prioritize tasks

·        Self-motivated and detail oriented with the ability to help develop procedures and routines with minimal supervision.
