Primary Purpose: To provide internal and external stakeholders with essential financial, customer service and administrative leadership and support within the pension functions in Financial Services. 

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager, Pensions & Benefits, this position plays an integral role in the administration and governance of the pension plans at the University.  Decisions ranging from routine to critical are required on a regular basis.  A high level of concentration is required for dealing with complex issues and a high volume of activity.  A firm understanding of defined benefit and defined contribution pension plan administration and governance is required.  Professional judgment is required to review one’s own and others’ work.  Strict deadlines imposed by internal requirements and regulatory agencies must be met.  This position requires well developed organizational skills.  The incumbent must have the ability to be a self-starting leader in the organization to provide support and guidance to senior leaders and to reporting staff members.


- Ensures all stakeholders including Pensions Manager, auditors, members of the pension plans, university departments, and pension committees receive timely, accurate reporting and analysis to support development decisions.
- Ensures reliability and accuracy of pension administration system.
- Assigns, reviews and monitors the work plans of other staff members in the Pensions area.
- Provides direction and leadership to other staff members to ensure tasks are being completed accurately, efficiently and on a timely basis.
- Reviews pension plan calculations to ensure accurate information is being provided to plan members.
- Reviews financial data to ensure adherence to pension plan governance requirements, internal and external regulatory policies/practices and reporting regulations and standards.
- Ensures all financial records and reconciliations relating to the 5 pension plans at the university are completed accurately on a monthly and annual basis.
- Ensures all financial statements and notes relating to the 5 pension plans at the university are completed accurately within the deadlines set by the Provincial Auditor.
- Provides timely and accurate support and information to the Provincial Auditor on an annual basis during the audit of the financial statements.
- Understands pension legislation to ensure compliance with federal and provincial legislation.
- Communicates and liaises with related external parties including trustees, record keepers, actuaries and consultants to ensure needs of pension plan stakeholders are being met.
- Communicates and provides one-on-one support to all pension plan members to ensure plan member needs are being met.
- Assists in monitoring and reviewing policies and practices to ensure compliance with governance expectations.
- Works collaboratively with ConnectionPoint, payroll to create efficiencies across functional teams


Education: An undergraduate degree in commerce or business administration with an accounting major, and/or a professional designation.  A Pension Plan Administration Certificate (PPAC) or working toward a PPAC designation is required. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: Three to five years of directly related experience in a dynamic collaborative environment.  Extensive involvement in the preparation of financial statements and other related financial reports.  Knowledge of defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans and applicable pension legislation is considered an asset.
