MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Martin Leclair - Proteus

The Annual Meeting held on June 1st marked the end of busy year for the CPBI Ontario Council  and its various committees.

First, I would like to thank the Market Development Committee for putting together the third issue of the newsletter and for its efforts to promote CPBI Ontario on the Twitter and LinkedIn social media platforms. The market intelligence gathered by this committee is important to the programming of events and to ensure we are offering educational content that matters to Ontario plan sponsors.

The Program Committee and our two Chapters in London and Ottawa have had a busy year as well, hosting a number of educational and networking events throughout the year. The very successful Ontario Conference, held in Toronto last October, was yet another testimony of CPBI’s relevance as it attracted industry experts and plan sponsors from across Canada. The planning for the Ontario/Quebec joint regional conference – a first in the history of CPBI – is now well underway and we are excited to offer you a great program.  Join us in beautiful Mont-Tremblant from September 12-14. Information about the program, registrations and sponsorships is on the CPBI website.

As you are aware, CPBI Ontario and HRPA have joined forces to provide pension and benefits education to their members. Our Partnership Committee was successful in expanding this program to London and Barrie.

I would also like to reiterate our commitment to good governance and operational efficiency. To that effect, the Ontario Council entered into an agreement with Association Management International. AMI will provide all normal and customary association management services to support the operations and activities of the CPBI in Ontario. Such services include administration, governance oversight, financial reporting and budgeting services, communication and event planning. AMI enables your Ontario Council to move the organization forward with confidence. The future looks bright.

Thank you to all our members, sponsors and supporters.

Natasha Monkman – Hicks, Morley, Hamilton, Stewart, Storie LLP

On April 27, 2016, the annual Benefits Outlook featured an eye-opening discussion regarding benefits plan fraud. At Fraud Happens: How to Prevent it and What to do When You Can’t, attendees heard from a panel of insurance company representatives Michele Madore (Green Shield Canada), Andrew Kautz (Great West Life) and Shelley Frolich (Sun Life) who discussed the latest trends in benefits plan fraud and what insurance companies are doing to detect, limit and respond to fraud. The great revelation of the morning was that it is nearly impossible to prevent benefits plan fraud, but the insurance companies have robust processes for detecting and responding to fraud when it happens. Read more...
