MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Natasha Monkman, Hicks Morley

This is my first Chair’s message in the CPBI Ontario Regional newsletter. I would like to start by thanking Martin Leclair for his leadership and enthusiasm over the past two years during which he was Chair of the CPBI Ontario Regional Council.

This week sees the start of a new school year. Here at CPBI, we are also looking forward to a new year of educational programming and networking opportunities. Most notably, our 2017 CPBI Ontario Regional Conference will be held in Niagara Falls next month. The program agenda is jam packed with fantastic and timely pension, investment and benefits sessions. I hope to see many CPBI members at the conference this year.

We are also very much looking forward to an enhanced program agenda throughout the year. In particular, we will be using more webinars to providing programming to our members throughout the province and not just locally to Toronto, London or Ottawa. For CPBI members, webinars are also free and easy to access. We will also continue our in-person programming, kicking off 2018 with our Signature Series investment forecast.

I hope to see you at our upcoming events. Please be sure to provide feedback at any events that you attend, as we value the feedback of our members and strive to create programming that meets your identified needs.

Yours truly,
Natasha (Tash) Monkman

THANK YOU TO MEDAVIE BLUE CROSS OUR DIAMOND SPONSOR!

CPBI Ontario is proud to have Medavie Blue Cross as our Diamond Sponsor!

Medavie Blue Cross:

Taking a unique, integrated approach to benefits through self care, healthcare and plan care.

Founded in 1943, we are a premier all-in-one carrier that provides a robust offering of coverage choices, including health, dental, hospital, vision, extended health providers, disability and more to individuals and organizations nation-wide. We are a member of the Canadian Association of Blue Cross plans that collectively provides coverage to over seven million Canadians.

We also oversee various government-sponsored health programs on behalf of provincial and federal governments, including Veterans Affairs Canada, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

At Medavie Blue Cross, we take an integrated approach to plan design and delivery that combines traditional health care options with self-care and drug management solutions, like our industry-leading Patient-First Network for specialty drugs. Our unique approach ensures plan sponsors get the absolute most out of their plans by improving health outcomes, increasing productivity, reducing absenteeism and lowering drug spends.

We leverage our diverse in-house expertise to quickly adapt to new trends and opportunities, and build plans that fit the evolving needs of our plan members. A few examples include our Medication Advisory Panel, which is made up of internal and external experts who assess the cost/benefit implications of all drugs considered for reimbursement, and our Managing Chronic Disease benefit that engages members in taking a more active role in their health – both firsts for Canada.

Together with Medavie Health Services, the largest private provider of emergency medical services in Canada, we are part of Medavie, a health organization that employs more than 5,500 Canadians.

As a not-for-profit organization, we pay a social dividend to address some of the most critical health care challenges Canada faces through the Medavie Health Foundation, with a special focus on child and youth mental health, post-traumatic stress disorder, and type 2 diabetes.

By taking a long-term view of health and care, we’re leading the way in helping plan sponsors meet the diverse needs and expectations of today’s multi-generational workforce, while keeping plans affordable and sustainable for the future, and contributing to healthier communities for all Canadians.

CPBI Member Testimonial

I have been a member of CPBI for over 10 years.  CPBI is much more than an Educational conference, it is a network of experts (both industry and plan sponsor related) who come together to share more than just market trends.  Many of the sessions have included in depth presentations and discussions on many challenges that face our Plan Sponsors today.  With every conference, I come away with new information that will assist me in strategy and innovative planning for my clients and their Pension and Benefit Plans.  Networking with colleagues gives members and their guests a chance to “brainstorm” ideas on how to tackle everything from new product lines, administration and technology.  I am proud to be a CPBI member!

Five Tips to Increase the Effectiveness of Benefits Communications with Employees

by Chris Lee (Accompass)

Designing a benefits package that fits the needs of a company is important and so is communicating about these benefits with employees. Without clear and simple messaging, employees may have the Cadillac of benefits packages and pension plans, but not fully appreciate them.

Benefits and retirement plans can be complex and hard to understand for many employees. Ineffective communications can lead employees to make poor decisions or worse, no decisions at all, which can be detrimental to their retirement. Thoughtful communications can help employees value and understand their benefits.

Between daily emails, meetings and workloads, employees are busy to say the least. Luckily, there are a few simple tricks to communicate with employees about their benefits and pensions effectively.

Keep the key message top of mind – what’s the call to action? Ensure that what employees need to do or know is centre stage. Keep the main message simple and clear and make it one of the first pieces of information the employee will see. Tier information, making the most critical point the most prominent so it has a chance to be absorbed. When employees skim an email between meetings, they won’t lose sight of why it’s important.

Use a ‘less is more’ mentality –a long-winded, content-heavy email regarding a pension plan might not be fully read… or read at all. If employees don’t have time to review a lengthy email, they might set it aside with the intent to review it later, which increases the chances of that email getting lost in the shuffle. It’s likely that the same point could be made in fewer words, and read in much less time. Condense the content so that employees don’t feel as though reading it is a burden.

Create structure with bite-sized portions – back to skimming, help employees by breaking out the message. Lists and steps help create order, something the brain loves to see. Employees can get the information they want or need quickly, even while skimming.

Leave out the HR jargon – not everyone understands investments, benefits and ‘HR jargon’ so use plain language to engage with employees. Often, when pensions are an individual’s bread and butter, they don’t realize that the content isn’t understandable for some. Take a step back and try to write the communication with that in mind.

Add some personality – HR messages can start to sound robotic. Keep it professional, but don’t be afraid to add personality and give it an approachable human feel – it can help lighten the tone and engage employees.

At the end of the day, there’s no perfect formula when it comes to communicating with employees, but take the time to create a clear message and break down the more technical content into a concise and engaging communication and it could help gain and maintain employees’ attention.

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!
