Pensions and retirement savings used to be a relatively straightforward area for HR professionals.

Not anymore.

While still a very important element of employee compensation, the landscape of pension and retirement savings has become much more complex.

Longer life expectancies and workplace demographics that often skew toward the more mature end of the spectrum are also complicating factors. And as pension law and regulation continue to evolve, a good understanding of the legal framework, best practices and risk management is critical to successful plan administration.

In this certificate course, master one of the most important elements of employee compensation, and learn how to make your firm's programs as efficient as possible. Caroline L. Helbronner

Partner at Blakes Law Firm

Caroline Helbronner practices exclusively in the areas of pensions, employee benefits and executive compensation. Caroline advises on all areas of the implementation, administration, funding taxation and wind-up of pension, group benefit, profit-sharing and deferred compensation arrangements. Caroline has deep experience advising clients in respect of pension, tax, trust and benefit issues arising in connection with cross-border situations, corporate transactions, insolvencies, ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements, the development and documentation of pension and employee benefit plans, de-risking, pension governance, investment and funding and custody arrangements. 

Caroline’s clients include private and public sector pension plan sponsors and administrators, financial institutions and service providers.


Natasha Monkman

Partner at Hicks Morley's Group 

Natasha Monkman is a partner in Hicks Morley’s Pension Benefits and Executive Compensation practice group.  She regularly advises private and public sector employers on a variety of plan administration, compliance and governance matters relating to their employee benefit plans and pension plans, including with respect to the administration of marriage breakdown and death benefit entitlements.  She also regularly advises employers under going significant transactions and with respect to pension plan funding issues.

 


Kim Ozubko

Partner in the Toronto office of Miller Thomson’s Pension and Benefits Group

A frequent speaker and author in the areas of pensions and benefits law, Kim advises clients in all areas of the firm’s pensions and benefits practice. Prior to joining Miller Thomson, Kim practiced pensions and benefits law at several international law firms and at an international pension consulting firm. Her current practice focuses on all legal and regulatory matters relating to the implementation, administration and governance of pension, group benefit and other retirement savings plans.  This includes advising clients on the development of pension and other employee benefit plans as well as on plan mergers and conversions, pension fund investment, fiduciary duties and ongoing regulatory compliance. She also advises clients on a full range of benefit issues in the employment law and unionized context including the implementation of employee communication strategies. Km has been recognized as a leading lawyer in the 2018 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in the area of Pensions and Employee Benefits.

 

Allyson Marta

Associate at Stikeman Elliot LLP 

Allyson Marta is an associate in the Pensions & Benefits Group at Stikeman Elliot LLP. Her practice focuses on pensions and benefits issues relating to corporate transactions, creditor/debtor agreements, and bankruptcy and insolvency matters, as well as pension plan compliance and administration. Prior to joining Stikeman Elliott, Allyson was a legal consultant at the Toronto office of one of the leading global human capital and management consulting firms. As a consultant, she advised on a broad range of administrative, compliance and strategic matters related to pension plans, and employment-related matters. Before joining the consulting firm, Allyson practiced pensions and benefits law at a human resources law firm in Calgary, Alberta, advising employers and a large public sector pension plan, on a variety of pensions and benefits matters. Allyson is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, and sits on the Ontario Regional Council of the Association of Canadian Pension Management.

 

Max Bazile

FSA, FCIA, FS, Deloitte Senior Manager, Actuarial, Rewards and Analytics

Max is a Senior Manager in Deloitte’s Actuarial, Rewards and Analytics group and leads Deloitte Toronto’s Pension and Benefits Actuarial Advisory Practice. Max has over 15 years’ experience in Pension Consulting, and saw his role grow from doing pension calculations and valuations to serving as a lead client advisor. He has lead a number of clients through a wide array of projects, such as plan design studies, governance reviews and pension de-risking exercises. Max is a Fellow of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries. He has written a number of articles, particularly around pension de-risking, and has been a guest speaker at several conferences.


Shenagh Rosa

The United Church of Canada Manager, Pension Compliance and Communications

Shenagh Rosa is a Pension Compliance and Communications Manager for the Pension Plan of the United Church of Canada, which has over 9000 members. Shenagh is responsible for regulatory filings and pension and benefit communications, including the Pension Plan Annual Report. Shenagh works with the Pension Board and its committees to provide legislative updates and facilitates projects such as the recent pension plan governance review. 

Prior to joining the United Church, Shenagh held a variety of positions in the Plan Sponsor, Insurance and TPA environments with roles in pension plan management, pension compliance and group benefit consulting and administration. Her 30 years working as both the plan sponsor and service provider sides, enables her to provide valuable insight on all aspects of benefits and pension. Shenagh is a member of the CPBI Ontario Regional Council and holds the CEBS designation.
