About the team
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Benefits team provides support to teachers and their eligible family members in relation to their coverage for health, prescription drug, and vision benefits; in addition to administering the Teachers’ Long Term Disability Plan, and Optional Life Insurance Plan (Portaplan).

What you’ll do
The disability claims representative works in a sensitive, empathetic and confidential manner as part of a team in the day-to-day administration of Teachers’ Long-Term Disability Plan claims.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide sensitive and empathetic service to claimants or their agents.
  • Answer inquiries and redirect inquiries where appropriate.
  • Communicate to claimants the results of adjudication meetings.
  • Complete and review disability benefit payment calculations for accuracy and consistency with Plan provisions.
  • Process new claims following adjudication; preparing letters to claimants, benefit calculations, pension remittances, and applicable reports.
  • Calculate changes to disability benefits as well as offsets to disability benefits from various sources.
  • Calculate monthly pension remittances and review annual remittances to ensure consistency.
  • Prepare monthly disability plan payroll on a timely basis.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to ensure accurate benefit coordination.
  • Compile and reconcile data for valuations, reports, and financial statements.
  • Attend monthly claim committee meetings to record adjudication decisions and provide updates on claimant files and standards of practice.
  • Review new applications to assess member’s eligibility to apply for benefits and completion of documentation.
  • Collaborate to identify claims to be recommended to the Claims Committee for referral to rehabilitation services.
  • Provide case management for LTD claims, as required.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the claims administration system and development of reports.

Requirements:

What you’ll bring

Two to four years of related post-secondary education with two to three years of related benefit administration experience, preferably in disability claims administration. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Knowledge of payroll and benefit best practices.
Proven ability to take initiative.
Strong analytical and mathematical skills, including knowledge of benefit calculations, pension service and earnings concepts.
Developed critical thinking skills, with an ability to analyze and interpret complex information and reports.
Ability to prioritize workload and meet competing deadlines while working in a team environment.
Demonstrated superior computer skills including proficiency in Word and Excel.
Established client-service, interpersonal and public relations skills.
Effective communication skills.
High work standards related to information accuracy, completeness and confidentiality.
