Benefits Fraud
Benefits fraud can have a significant impact on group plans. Rising health care costs already have plan sponsors concerned about the sustainability of their benefits offerings. Fraud adds to that burden. This presentation will touch upon the schemes commonly seen in group benefit fraudulent activity and the tools being used by Sun Life to prevent, detect and deter fraudulent abuse of group benefit plans.

Alex Popovic, Sun Life
Alex Popovic is the Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Investigations for Sun Life Financial. Prior to this role, Alex was the Assistant Vice President, Operational and Fraud Risk Management for Sun Life’s Canadian Operations. This included being the Canadian Operations Fraud Officer and management of Sun Life Group Benefit’s, Investigation Services Unit.
Alex has an extensive investigation and anti-fraud career prior to his engagement with Sun Life. He has nearly 3 decades of policing experience with the latter 15 years conducting economic crime investigations, both nationally and internationally. Alex represented Canada on several international and bi-lateral government committees dealing with economic crimes.
Legal Update
The 2014 Ontario Budget has implications for Long Term Disability plans provided by employers. This presentation will outline the new requirements and the implications of same, as well as addressing the policy considerations behind the changes. The presentation will also review the change in legislation permitting the division of provincial pensions when spouses separate and the recent case law and implications for pension providers.

A partner at Cohen Highley LLP, Christian practices in the area of commercial litigation with a strong focus on employment law, where he advises employers on a broad range of legal matters, including hiring, disciplinary proceedings, termination, disability accommodation, human rights complaints and wrongful dismissal actions. He regularly appears on behalf of clients before all levels of court in Ontario.
Christian obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto in 2003 and his Bachelor of Laws through the University of Western Ontario in 2006. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2007 and joined Cohen Highley in 2011.
Iain Sneddon, Cohen Highley LLP
Iain is the Department Head of Family Law and Pension Law at Cohen Highley. He guest lectures as various Law Society events including the Middlesex Family Law Association, the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law and the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute. He is Counsel of record for numberous reported decisions in family law. Iain has also provided legal opinions and represented counsel in LawPro matters relating to claims of solicitor negligences in family law issues.
Iain received his Bachelors degree from the University of Western Ontario and his law degree from the University of Manitoba, Robson Hall Law School.
