Biologics continue to be a significant cost in providing health benefits. Biosimilars are representing limited cost savings compared to expectations. This webinar will examine the medical, patient & payer reasons why savings with biosimilars have been limited and discuss strategies that can realize savings.

Dr. Vipul Jairath, will speak to his prescribing of biosimilars and biologics with a specific target of when biosimilars are utilized and not. Switching will be discussed including studies on the outcome of patients after they have been switched.

Mina Mawani from the Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, will explain the current available biologic treatments; the organisation's position on biosimilars, and will discuss IBD clinician concerns regarding a non-medical switch policy’s implications in Canada.

Kevin O’Connor will guide the session attendee’s through a 5-year experience model that includes data on the average time a plan member is on a biologic, the average time a plan member remains on treatment after being switched to a biosimilar and the cost of the treatments after a plan member has left a biosimilar. The discussion will end with examining a recently available strategy that utilizes both biosimilars and branded biologics and the scope of the possible savings.

Speakers

	Vipul Jairath, BSc MBChB PhD MRCP (UK) Associate Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Division of Gastroenterology Western University & London Sciences Health Centre Dr. Jairath trained in the United Kingdom and has degrees in pharmacology and medicine from the University of Leeds, a PhD (DPhil) from the University of Oxford and diploma in clinical trials from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is Associate Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University and also a practicing Gastroenterologist at University Hospital, where he specialises in inflammatory bowel disease, general gastroenterology and endoscopy. His research interests are in the design, conduct and implementation of randomized controlled trials, index development and outcomes research. He has successfully obtained several peer reviewed grants from government funding agencies to conduct clinical studies and he supervises several research fellows. He holds professional memberships with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Royal College of Physicians (UK), British Society of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization.

	Mina Mawani, MHSc-HA, ICD.D President and Chief Executive Officer, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada Mina Mawani joined Crohn’s and Colitis Canada as President and CEO in April 2015. Applying her passion and enthusiasm to the Crohn’s and colitis community, Mina is deeply engaged with the issues that matter most to her constituents – finding cures and improving lives for the millions of Canadians affected by these chronic diseases. With over 15 years of experience in non-profit, private sector, hospital, and government roles, Mina is an experienced leader and change navigator, guiding non- profits from vision to strategy to results.Mina currently serves on the Board of Pine River Institute and served on the Boards of Seneca College, Research Canada and Women’s College Hospital (where she chaired the Governance and Nominating Committee). Mina is a member of the International Women’s Forum Canada (IWFC). Mina has held a number of leadership roles, including President and CEO of the Canadian Women’s Foundation, Chief Development Officer and Executive Committee member at Civic Action, and CEO of the Aga Khan Council for Canada. Earlier in her career, she held key roles at the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2017, Mina received the ICCC Humanitarian of the Year award and became a Diversity 50 candidate. In 2015, Mina received the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award for her achievements and contributions to Canada.

	Kevin O'Connor National Director, Private Insurance Janssen Inc Kevin O'Connor is the director of federal and private healthcare at Janssen Inc, which. is a division of Johnson & Johnson that markets medications for a wide number of diseases including autoimmune disorders, oncology, HIV, mental health, diabetes and women’s health. O'Connor has held positions in sales, marketing, new business development and government relations. He has worked within the private insurance market for over ten years. Currently, he has a focus on Canadian health policy and the impact on employer sponsored benefits.
