Message from the Chairperson |
| It is my pleasure to offer greetings on behalf of the Saskatchewan Regional Council of CPBI. The leaves are turning color, the harvest is progressing and once again, we look forward to another busy year ahead. The Regional Council has been meeting, planning and preparing to offer many pensions, benefits, and investments sessions. This upcoming year will again feature luncheons/breakfasts on trending topics and how they relate to you, our Saskatchewan members. In addition, planning continues for our annual Regional Conference to be held at the Delta Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon on April 22nd and 23rd, 2015.

This year’s conference, themed “Connections and Creativity”, is chaired by Trina Kistner and she is very excited about bringing in top experts to speak to their fields. As in past years, this is a great opportunity to meet like-minded colleagues and to enhance your knowledge on many topics that continue to be at the forefront of industry issues. Over the past 6 months, CPBI has been updating our website to allow easier navigation, and is pleased to offer online payment through our Saskatchewan webpage and events calendar. Please take some time to revisit the site for up-to-date information on upcoming events, to update your profile, and to browse previous presentations. We are working hard with our national office to continue to meet your needs and respond to requests from our site. As technology continues to change at a rapid pace, you will see that Saskatchewan CPBI can now be found on LinkedIn and Twitter. Please follow us for regular updates on current events happening within Saskatchewan.
This year is my second year as Chair, and I am honored to be part of a Council who works tirelessly to meet and discuss topics that would be most interesting to CPBI members. This dedication and commitment has not gone unnoticed and I would like to thank each and every one of them for their efforts. I am very confident that this year will be full of lively discussion, intriguing dialogue and relevant information on a diverse array of topics. In addition, I would be remiss if many thanks were not extended to our Regional Administrator for always being available to assist with the planning and coordinating of the events. In closing, I look forward to connecting with members during our events either in Regina or Saskatoon. Please feel free to contact me or anyone from Council if you have ideas or topics that you are interested in and would like presented at events in our region. We are here to represent you, the members of CPBI. Bob Wilhelms, Chair

A TRIP to Pension SustainabilityWednesday, October 15, 2014 – Luncheon at Radisson Hotel, Saskatoon Thursday, October 16, 2014 – Luncheon at Hotel Saskatchewan, Regina |
| Pension sustainability has emerged as one of the most important issues of our time and stakeholders across all groups continue to look for innovative solutions that meet the needs of all parties involved. Similar to many organizations with defined benefit plans, the Regina Police Service struggled with the sustainability of its pension plan for many years for many reasons, including: poor investment returns, changing economic environment, increased longevity, and members taking earlier retirement. Recognizing that it needed to change its model, the Regina Police Service undertook the immense challenge of overhauling its pension plan. Through a collaborative effort and shared commitment to identify a solution that worked for all stakeholders (employer, union and regulator), the Regina Police Service introduced changes that would see them close their existing defined benefit plan and implement a new target benefit plan (i.e., Target Retirement Income Plan for the Regina Police Service (TRIP)) for future service. Together, Evan Bray (top), Staff Sergeant with the Regina Police Service, and Troy Milnthorp (bottom), Associate Partner with Aon Hewitt, will share the story of this journey and will cover:
